Goblets

Our goblets are not meant for holding liquids but are for decorative purposes only although many of them can be used as elegant candle holders if desired.

They are very tactile and are lovely to hold or stroke due to the beautiful smooth finish of the wood.

Each goblet is unique and following the course and grain of the timber that we start with. Sometimes we start out making a candlestick which turns, on the lathe, into a goblet as the grain and colouring suggests that this is what the wood needs to be.

Sometimes there is a problem with the wood. When turning this goblet at high speed on the lathe a knotted section of timber detached itself and flew across the workshop. This detached section would have brought real interest to the item had it remained but this was obviously not to be. We at Bashley Art however see this as an opportunity to try something different which is when our special resin items come into play. We wanted a glass effect to be matched to the timber but given the high melting point of glass and the fact that we are woodworkers and not glass blowers left us with a slight quandary. Then we started using glass clear polyester resin instead. We can colour this with special dyes and then sand as necessary to a glass-like finish. It takes a lot of work and these pieces are more expensive than our regular ranges due to the many more processes involved but the results can be truly beautiful as this tea-light goblet shows.
