All of our products are finished to the highest possible standard and have been treated to ensure that they are as durable as possible. All of our wood is sourced from the New Forest and is hand worked, dried and tested prior to being sold. The wood is however obviously a natural material and needs care and attention from time to time.
We aim to sell our pieces with a moisture content of about 12-14% WME which is the Wood Moisture Equivalent percentage. Timber products of all types are prone to shrinkage and cracking as they dry out. Most homes will have a moisture content that is compatible with this percentage but in especially dry or hot conditions this residual moisture may dry out further and too quickly leading to cracking or warping to occur.
We would recommend that you do not place your piece in direct sunlight or near any heat sources certainly for the first year or so until it has acclimatised to the moisture and heating levels that you enjoy in your home.
As shown in the photo at the top pf this page, all of our products are treated with various waxes or oils. Further information regarding these can be found on the specific pages of our website.
It is recommended that you treat the wood from time to time to stop it from drying out and to help it retain its natural lustre. A good beeswax is a natural choice for us and will enable your product to remain beautiful.
Rings however are slightly different. As they are much thinner than our other products (in order to make them wearable) they have been treated with special CA glues. These are in fact superglues. A very thin glue is used for the inside face of the ring which penetrates into the wood itself adding strength. A thicker superglue is then used on the exterior faces of the rings. This helps to waterproof and protect the ring. It is built up in at least three coats and is finely sanded between coats to give a glossy and protective final finish to the ring.
Waxes will work on rings in the short term and can be used as a weekly treatment, but we have found that they rub off easily with frequent daily use and the ring will eventually become damaged through water ingress.
Obviously our wooden rings are as strong as we can possibly make them but we would not recommend wearing them in prolonged contact with water such as in a bath or swimming pool. Provided that the external coat is not badly chipped they should be fine for getting damp occasionally in such situations as washing of hands or in the rain. If the external coating does get damaged or if it starts to become a little worn, we do offer a service for refinishing them with our original materials and treatments so that they look new once again.
